This session: Giving a Damn in the Age of Indifferent Intelligence

The problem with artificial intelligence, as our guest puts it, is that computers don't give a damn. Machines can now write, converse, & optimize but they cannot care. And as AI systems take over more of our work & cater ever more precisely to our preferences, the deeper risk is the slow erosion of our capacity to care, to commit, & to find things worth wanting in the first place.

In this session, our founder Banu Kellner sits down with B. Scot Rousse to explore what care actually is, why it may be the missing foundation of the AI alignment problem, & how we might design technologies to recover our ability to give a damn.

B. Scot Rousse ("B") Visiting scholar & lecturer in the Philosophy department Uc Berkeley, & an affiliate researcher at Topos Institute. His work foregrounds the embodied, skillful, & caring dimensions of human life often obscured by computational models of mind & intelligence. He has also been drumming in punk bands his entire life.
